Apply an International lens to leadership, change management and ethics

The Master of Global Management will prepare you to manage international complexities in business.

You'll learn about the nuances of leading a business with global reach.

You'll leverage your cultural knowledge to develop a global mindset that helps you navigate business functions across borders.

And, you'll study how cultural complexities, like political geography and international economics, inform business practices.

International connections

Our MGM students come from across Canada and around the world. Professional diversity of this kind enhances the learning environment, especially in this program with an international focus. You'll engage in deep conversations and analysis to apply to on-the-job issues.

As you study the essentials of international business, you'll also learn about diverse cultures — including your own. You'll see how cultural sensitivity plays a strong role in developing business relationships.

Program completion options

You'll choose one of four program completion options in your Royal Roads MGM:

  1. global management project
  2. internship research project
  3. Royal Roads graduate certificate
  4. MITx MicroMasters®

MGM + MBA dual degree

New in January 2022: Expand your executive leadership skills by combining your MGM with the Master of Business Administration in Executive Management.

Learn more about the dual degree option.

Program delivery

You can choose to complete this program in one of two ways:

  1. through a blend of online courses and on-campus residencies
  2. entirely on campus

Option 1: Blended

Complete your MGM through our blended learning model, a mix of online courses and on-campus residencies.

Online learning

Online courses consist of assigned readings, synchronous or asynchronous lectures, interactive discussions, and individual and team assignments.

You’re expected to meet deadlines and contribute meaningfully to your class. Your contributions are a big part of everyone’s learning.

Residencies

This blended program has two two-week residencies.

Residencies are intensive and immersive. Many students say this time together is the highlight of their program.

During your residency, you can expect to:

  • attend classes full time (e.g., Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • complete homework and individual and team assignments outside of class hours
  • take part in extracurricular activities

Your first residency is on campus at Royal Roads.

Your second is a two-week international residency. In the past, we've travelled to Austria, China, Germany and Turkey. Students will need to pay for air travel, accommodations and meals; tuition and travel within the country is covered by your program fees.

You'll get to enjoy the culture of your international destination too, with field trips to nearby cities and landmarks.

Option 2: On campus

Studying on campus brings you together with your class colleagues and instructors. Expect the program to be rigorous. You’ll do homework, readings and team assignments outside of your full-time class hours. And, you'll take part in extracurricular activities.

The calendar year is organized on a quarterly system with each quarter lasting approximately 11 weeks.

Cohort model

In both the blended and on-campus MGM, you'll be part of a cohort — a group of professionals from around the world who are studying with you.

The tight bonds and support of your classmates will help you overcome challenges and keep you moving forward. The perspectives you develop and the network you build will help you advance in your field and open new opportunities for you to get the most out of your career.

In your courses, whether online or in person, you'll be expected to contribute by engaging in discussions, team work and reflection.

Your participation is a big part of your and your classmates’ learning. Participation and team work are part of your final grade.

You'll depend on your team as much as they depend on you.

  • Applicants with less than two years (60 credits) of related post-secondary education should have at least ten years of relevant full-time work experience, including at least five years in a management role.

Additional requirements

  • Solid academic and business research, writing and critical thinking skills are required for success in this program. Applicants need to include detailed information and evidence that highlights research, writing and critical thinking skills gained through academic and/or work experience. The applicant’s statement of intent will be used as one piece of evidence in assessing writing competence. • Accounting and numeracy skills are required for success in this program. Applicants need to include detailed information and evidence that highlights accounting and numeracy skills gained through academic and/or work experience. Applicants who need to refresh and/or sharpen their accounting skills may be required to successfully complete one or more accounting courses as a condition of admission. To meet this condition, applicants would be required to successfully complete RRU Continuing Studies' ACCT090 Principles of Accounting course with a 73% ('B') grade.

All applications to this program require submission of the following information and supporting documents before your file can be assessed for admission:

Application form

In order to apply online, you will be required to create a log-in account using your email address. You will be required to list all credit courses and/or programs you have completed or are currently enrolled in. An application fee will be required. If your application fees are being paid by a third party, review sponsored student information. Once submitted, you may check the status of your application at any time.

Missed your application deadline? While we can’t make any guarantees, we may be able to accommodate late applications if there's still space and enough time to process. If you're interested in an intake that is now closed to applications, apply for the next available intake and email Admissions with your preferred start date. Make sure you’re prepared to submit your program's required documents right away. We can't make an admissions decision without them.

Official transcripts

Applicants are responsible for arranging for the submission of official transcripts from ALL post-secondary (higher education) institutions currently or previously attended, for all credit courses and/or programs. Transcripts are not required for non-credit programs or courses, though some programs may require proof of professional certifications or designations.

Transcripts are considered official only if submitted directly by the Registrar or other recognized authority of the providing institution in the institution's original, sealed envelope. If the envelope has been opened, the transcripts are no longer official and new (official) transcripts will be required to complete your application.

All international transcripts or credentials are subject to an international transcript and/or credential evaluation.

Statement of intent

The statement of intent should consist of a 500-1000 word essay addressing the following four questions:

  • What influenced your decision to apply to the Masters of Global Management program at Royal Roads University?
  • How have you gained the research, writing, critical thinking and numeracy/accounting skills necessary for success in this program?
  • Students at the master’s level learn from their instructors, from their readings, from their experiences inside and outside the classroom, and from each other. What do you hope to contribute to the educational experience of your fellow students while you are in the program?
  • In 5-10 years, how do you anticipate this program will add value to your career?

Letters of reference

One reference letter should be based on work/life experience and the other based on either academic performance or community service. However, two work-related references are acceptable in certain cases.

The reference letters should confirm that an applicant is a suitable candidate for an MGM program. The writer(s) should articulate why they feel the applicant will succeed in such a program, whether they feel it will benefit the applicant (and why), the applicant's ability to work with others (in teams) and any other information about the applicant which could identify them as a good fit for the program. The context in which the referee has come to know the applicant should also be mentioned. Length and level of detail in the letters may vary; there is no set standard.

Detailed résumé (or curriculum vitae)

A structured and detailed résumé(or curriculum vitae) is one that provides us a comprehensive professional profile of the applicant. We are interested in knowing where an applicant has worked, for how long, and what they were responsible for in the positions held. Provide as much information as possible. Your detailed résumé should include the following:

  • Education: List all post-secondary education, degrees, diplomas, and certificates you have achieved.
  • Work experience: Please include name of organization, length of service (month and year, hours of work per week), and a brief description of duties. Please include a company website if available.
  • Training and professional development: List career related training and professional development programs completed with the past five years. Include the source of training, and the duration and year completed. List other training and personal development programs not already identified.
  • Voluntary/unpaid work experience: List and describe any voluntary/unpaid post-secondary employment and/or community service experience. Please include name of organization, length of service and a brief description of duties.
  • Information technology training and experience: Briefly describe your level of training and experience in the use of information technology including computers, software and telecommunications networks as tools for business, education, teaching and personal use.
  • Professional memberships/affiliations: List memberships and positions you hold/have held in professional associations, service clubs, community/volunteer sector.
  • Other relevant information

Standardized test results (optional)

  • Scores on relevant standardized tests, such as the GMAT, are not required for admission to the program, but may be included in the application as evidence of important skills necessary to succeed in a graduate business program.  Applicants who have achieved a GMAT score of 500 or better will be deemed to have met the academic writing and numeracy skills requirement for the MGM program, and GMAT scores may be used as evidence to support flexible admissions.

If applicable:

  • Applicants declaring permanent resident or Convention Refugee status in Canada, must submit a copy of their Permanent Resident Card (PR card) along with their application.
  • Transcript evaluation fee or credential evaluation report, if submitting international transcripts.
  • An official English language proficiency score report or other evidence of proficiency if English is not your primary language.
  • Other information or documents as may be requested to determine your eligibility.

For information on how and where to send your supporting documents, please refer to the document submission guidelines.

Transfer credit or advanced standing

Programs offered at Royal Roads University are highly integrated and do not lend themselves to course by course transfer of credit for advanced standing. In exceptional cases, students who demonstrate an active professional certification and work experience in a particular field (such as a CPA or a law license in Canada), may be able to seek exemption from specific program courses such as accounting and international law. In these cases, students will need to demonstrate their currently valid Canadian professional certification, a list of academic courses completed in the subject area, demonstration of successful completion of the topics covered by the program course at Royal Roads University, and work experience in the applied professional area.

We offer four options for you to complete your Master of Global Management.

You can choose the option that works best for your goals.

Option 1: Global management project

In the global management project, you'll examine a global management issue in the industry of your choice.

You can complete the project in one of two ways:

  1. an applied research project on a topic or organization that you choose, for example, an issue you've encountered in your career
  2. a consulting project, in which you'll work with an organization to explore an issue

If you choose the consulting project, you can use it to qualify for a Certified Management Consultant (CMC) designation, offered by the Canadian Association of Management Consultants.

The global management project is a good fit for students with previous business experience. You'll be able to select an issue you've faced in your career and explore it in depth using the skills, knowledge, and competencies you’ve learned in the MGM program.

Option 2: Internship research project

In the internship research project, you'll spend 420 hours with an organization and draft a report to help with a management issue.

You'll start your internship after you've completed the MGM's 12 months of coursework. After spending a minimum of 12 weeks with the client, you'll have 11 weeks to work on the written component of your project.

The internship research project is a good fit for students looking for practical experience in Canada and abroad. It's a great way to try out a new industry.

We'll help you through the process of finding an internship in your preferred industry. You'll attend workshops for career development and work search skills. Learn more about our internship support.

Option 3: Graduate certificate

Complete a Royal Roads graduate certificate as part of your MGM. You'll need to apply to and be accepted in the graduate certificate program you're interested in.

With the graduate certificate option, your transcript will show you've completed two credentials: the MGM and the graduate certificate. Doing a graduate certificate might extend the length of time required to complete your degrees.

If you've already completed a Royal Roads graduate certificate, you can apply those credits toward your MGM.

MGM + MBA dual degree

Combine the MGM with the MBA in Executive Management at Royal Roads University.

Doing both master's degrees will give you the advantage you're looking for in your career. You'll gain executive leadership knowledge and gain the experience, skills and perspective to lead a global business.

New applicants

For students who have not completed an MGM or MBA at Royal Roads

You'll spend the first year of your studies taking required courses in either the MGM or MBA. In the second year, you'll cross over to the other program and take its required courses.

You'll choose a specialization (graduate certificate or MITx MicroMasters®) and complete an applied research project.

You can take time off in between the two degrees to gain work experience before completing the second master's.

To be accepted to do the dual degree, you'll need to meet the admission requirements for both the MGM and the MBA.

MGM and MBA alumni

If you've already completed your MGM or MBA at Royal Roads, you can return to the university at any time to do the second master's degree.

To complete the second degree, you'll take its required courses. You won't need to retake core courses that are common between both degrees (e.g., corporate finance).

You'll also need to complete a specialization (graduate certificate or MITx MicroMasters®) and an applied research project.

To be accepted into the second program, either the MGM and the MBA, you'll need to meet its admission requirements.
