Learn more about extending your study permit in Canada
Every study permit has an expiry date, which tells you when you need to stop studying in Canada. If your study permit expires before the end date of your program, you must apply for a study permit extension in order to continue studying in Canada.
We strongly recommend applying for a study permit extension at least eight months before your current permit expires. However, processing times may vary, so it is essential to check IRCC's most recent processing times. Applying early helps ensure you maintain your status in Canada and can continue studying and working without interruption.
You can only apply for a study permit extension from within Canada.
Please note: If you submit your extension on the day your study permit expires, your application must be submitted before midnight Coordinated Universal Time, not midnight in your local time zone.
Important Information
PAL Exemption for Current RRU Students:
If you are a current Royal Roads University (RRU) student extending your study permit to continue studying at the same academic level (undergraduate or graduate), and your original study permit application was submitted with an RRU Letter of Admission, you do not need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL). See the full list of PAL exemptions.
If you are changing schools:
Effective November 8, 2024, you must be enrolled at the Designated Learning Institution (DLI) listed on your current study permit. If you plan to transfer schools to a different institution, please ensure to plan ahead by:
- Apply for a study permit extension before your current permit expires. Use your RRU Letter of Admission and PAL as soon as they are available.
- Do not begin your studies at the new institution until your new study permit is approved and lists RRU as your designated DLI.
