Study and sightsee

Spend two to six weeks abroad at one of our partner institutions in Asia, Europe or Mexico.

You'll expand your mind with courses and culture and enjoy a learning experience like no other.

During your short-term study abroad experience, you'll take classes at the university of your choice then take in the sights, history, art and food of the region.

Once your courses are done, you'll be well positioned to expand your stay and travel.

Get ready to study abroad

Step 1: Choose your destination

Review the study abroad opportunities listed at the bottom of this page. All the information you need is in the table — program details, fees and deadlines.

Decide where you want to travel and study.

Step 2: Applying

Fill out the form to apply for a short-term study abroad. The form includes information like where and when you want to go.

Once we've received your application, we'll get in touch with you about next steps.

Some of our partner institutions deduct their tuition fees or waive tuition for Royal Roads students. If you'd like to be considered for complimentary or reduced tuition, you'll need to submit a 500-word statement in your application.

Step 3: Getting approval

After you've heard from us about your application, you can take these next steps to get approval for your short-term study abroad experience:

  1. Request a letter of permission to study at another university.
You'll submit your request through your MyAdmin Account. The letter will need to be approved by your program.
  2. Apply to the institution abroad.
Each institution has different application requirements. Check the table at the bottom of this page for instructions. If you need help, contact us.

Step 4: Getting credit for your courses

You may be eligible to earn academic credit at Royal Roads for the classes you take during your short-term study abroad experience.

You'll need to get approval from your program head.

Here's how:

  1. Gather information about the program you'll be taking courses in, including course descriptions.
  2. Make an appointment with your program head to review the information.
  3. Fill out the completion plan with your program head and send it to an education abroad coordinator.

If you receive approval to earn Royal Roads credits, make sure you get an official transcript from the partner institution.

To apply the credits, submit the official transcript to the education abroad team in an envelope sealed by the partner institution.

Step 5: Before you go

You have a few more steps to take before you board your plane:

  1. Expenses and accommodation
The university you're going to will have information about their tuition and fees, accommodations, the best way to travel there and more. Visit their website for details.
  2. Study abroad preparation
Review these two guides. They include information about passports, visas, vaccines, travel insurance, currency conversion and more.
    - general preparation checklist
    - pre-departure handbook
  3. Royal Roads forms
Submit the following forms before you leave:
    - release of liability agreement
    - emergency contact information
  4. International SOS
Students travelling abroad through Royal Roads will have international travel assistance through International SOS. Trip planning support is also available. You'll get a card with your account information from your education abroad coordinator.
