New tool helps students assess readiness for online learning environments

On July 24, Royal Roads Master of Arts in Learning and Technology (MALAT) program head Dr. Elizabeth Childs will present a draft of a new tool that helps people assess their readiness to participate in fully online learning environments.

Participants in the interactive session will both preview and be part of the revision process for the tool. They will also take away strategies for their own learning, teaching or research practice, and explore models for online learning communities at Royal Roads and beyond.

“I think what Royal Roads is really doing well is focusing on the student experience—remembering that at the core of all of this is a human being,” says Dr. Childs, whose work has focused on the lived experience of the person on the other end of online learning technology.

The research-informed self-assessment tool was recently presented at the World Conference on Online Learning in Toronto, the Networked Learning Conference in Croatia and EdMedia in Amsterdam. It is scheduled for pilot testing in fall 2018.

The free presentation runs from 12 to 1 p.m. at the LIC Centre for Dialogue at Royal Roads and via livestream as part of SET Presents, a speaker series hosted by the School of Education and Technology.
