MALAT student moving dental programs online
Joyce Wimmer focused her final Master of Master of Arts in Learning and Technology digital learning research consulting project on examining the impact of an interactive online module in the annual training and preparedness of staff in dental programs. Little did she know that by the time she was conducting her research, this topic would be in high demand in her sector.
Her abstract is below as well as link to the online module she created and her blog should you wish to connect with her further. She is now moving forward to use her lessons learned coming out of her research as she works to help her program design online and hybrid learning experiences for the fall semester. Well done Joyce, the MALAT program and the School of Education and Technology wish you all the best in your work!
Abstract: This research examined an interactive online module can be utilized in the annual training and preparedness of dental staff in the clinical and laboratory setting. A digital learning resource (DLR) was developed by the researcher using criteria delineated by the project sponsor and considering the TPACK theoretical framework. Qualitative data was collected from 10 clinical staff through pre- and post-module surveys. The results revealed that although most (80%) participants felt that the module was well-designed to replace face-to-face interactions, some (20%) felt that it would not replace the face-to-face experience due to their learning preference of “learning by doing”. Eight recommendations emerged for the next cycle of the action research project. This study emphasized the need to further investigate options to address the needs of a kinesthetic learner. The next steps, such as the addition of training modules for staff, and adapting the training modules for students, were also discussed.
