The School of Leadership Studies wishes to thank BC Cancer – Victoria and Island Health for their engagement as our Leadership Challenge™ sponsoring organization for the 2021 Master of Arts in Leadership – Health Specialization cohort.
The purpose of the Leadership Challenge™ is to create a mutually beneficial learning experience for a local organization and graduate students in the first year of their Master of Arts in Leadership. To create this learning experience, some inquiry with the organizational sponsor is necessary and we are grateful to Kelly Nystedt, Executive Director, BC Cancer – Victoria; Tracy Martell, Executive Director – Surgery, Ambulatory Care, and Cancer Care, Strategy, Island Health; Heather Nash, Coordinator Regional Cancer Care, BC Cancer – Victoria; Robyne Maxwell, Director – Renal, Trauma, and Cancer Care Strategy, Island Health, and participating members of the Integrated Cancer Care Strategy Council for their generous commitment of time and voluntary engagement in this activity. Thank you for your engagement and ongoing support!
The Integrated Cancer Care Strategy Council is a partnership between BC Cancer – Victoria, and Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health) committed to offering coordinated, standardized, effective, and high-quality cancer care for patients in communities served by Island Health and BC Cancer – Victoria. For the Leadership Challenge™, students specifically explored how the Integrated Cancer Care Strategy Council can support timely, responsive, patient-centred, and community-based care for patients living in rural communities, while also supporting the wellbeing of staff.
In response to participating in this activity, Kelly Nystedt of the Integrated Cancer Care Strategy Council offered the following reflections:
“Cancer touches us all. As the burden of cancer continues to grow, patients and families find themselves increasingly challenged to navigate this complex health care system. As a member of the Vancouver Island Integrated Cancer Care Strategy Council, it was such an honour to participate in the Leadership Challenge. This opportunity to work side by side with the 2021 Master of Arts in Leadership – Health Specialization cohort, provided the platform for us to share, learn, and grow together; to proudly celebrate our successes, to vulnerably expose our deficiencies and to explore how as partner healthcare organizations, we can create a shared vision and mission to provide the best possible cancer care services to the patients and families in the Vancouver Island community we serve, today and into the future.”
