The objective of our project is to create accessible educational material for Rocky Point Bird Observatory (RPBO). We created online and physical resources in the form of brochures and PowerPoints to help the public understand bird conservation issues and solutions in a more in-depth manner.

For our research, we took key bird conservation ideas that individuals can implement and developed them to create five educational topics. The brochure and PowerPoint topics completed are:

  • Creating a Bird-Friendly Home;
  • How Pets Affect Birds;
  • Outdoor Recreation with Birds;
  • Ethical Consumerism & Birds;
  • Bird-Friendly Gardening Practices.

We completed the research for these topics online, with additional informational guidance from our sponsors Alison Moran and Ann Nightingale. Pictures for these deliverables were sourced online, from our sponsors, and taken by our group members. These brochures and PowerPoints give concise information in plain language on how individuals can help with bird conservation.

On World Migratory Bird Day, we attended an event held by RPBO. There, we showed the general public different potential brochure designs and obtained their opinions on what features were most engaging. This feedback was implemented in our final brochure design.

This project is important for inspiring action on bird conservation. Thirteen of the native bird species currently residing on Southern Vancouver Island are already on the endangered list (CRD, 2019). With our public outreach, we hope that the importance of bird conservation will be taken seriously. With the simple changes we suggest throughout our brochures and PowerPoints, we aim to help preserve British Columbia's bird diversity.
