Nature and history of Royal Roads’ Hatley Park is beautifully detailed in a feature spread in Landscape Trades. The article walks through 565 acres of Hatley Park, including walking trails, Garry oak meadows, a migratory bird sanctuary at Esquimalt Lagoon and numerous gardens surrounding the historic Hatley Castle.

Here is an excerpt about history:

“If you see Garry oak meadows for sure the First Nations have had something to do with it,” said gardener John Kwaksistala, who is of Songhees and Wei Wai Kum ancestry.”

Here is an excerpt about nature:

“You’ve got water in so many different forms — the lagoon, the ocean, the fish ladders, the creeks, the ponds,” Allison said. “And then you’ve got this huge diversity of forest and different plant material and the nature that goes along with that. What really makes this kind of special is the balance and harmony of so many different things and the buzz of biodiversity that is here.”
