Changemakers speakers series launches online
This year marks Royal Roads’ 25th anniversary as a university and leader in online learning. To celebrate this milestone and as an anniversary gift to the community, the university is launching the Changemakers Speakers Series online this September.

Commanding Hope: The Power We Have to Safeguard a World in Peril is both the focus of his speech, and the title of his latest book, which was released Sept. 1.
Calling on history, cutting-edge research, complexity science and even The Lord of the Rings, Homer-Dixon lays out the tools we can command to rescue a world on the brink. In his speech, he will call on his extraordinary knowledge of complexity science, of how societies work and can evolve, and of our capacity to handle threats. And he’ll show that we can shift human civilization onto a decisively new path if we mobilize our minds, spirits, imaginations and collective values.
The Changemakers series will feature speakers on topics that explore the complex challenges facing humanity and innovative ideas about how we might solve them – even more relevant as the world considers living with, and looking beyond, COVID-19. All talks will be hosted by President Philip Steenkamp and streamed live on the Royal Roads Facebook page.
“We had planned to launch in March, but the pandemic had other plans and we had to put the series on hold,” says Royal Roads University President Philip Steenkamp.
“While the pandemic certainly changed our plans, the spirit of the series, bringing dynamic, exciting speakers to south Vancouver Island and to our alumni and friends around the world, remains intact. These talks are free to the public and for students, professionals, alumni and concerned citizens. The series is about ideas for everyone.”
The series will be hosted entirely online, ensuring safety for the speakers and the audience – and allowing people throughout the country and the world to join.
