Mohan Singh Jawl

Mohan Singh Jawl is a business leader who has ably demonstrated that corporate and community goals can be merged to the benefit of all.

His is a quintessential Canadian success story – blending business acumen with a quiet commitment to community. The youngest son of a hard-working immigrant family, Mr. Jawl and his brothers have built up one of Victoria’s most successful development companies: Jawl Holdings. Their many projects include the Selkirk Waterfront, which re-vitalized the site of a former mill where the brothers had worked as teenagers, gathering woodcuttings to be sold for firewood.  City planners consider the mixed-use Selkirk Waterfront an anomaly among developments because it received such widespread public support – a tribute to the developers’ collaborative, community-building approach.

In addition to his position with the family-owned development company, Mr. Jawl is a partner at Jawl and Bundon, a law firm he co-founded in 1973. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1984. His past and current appointments include directorships of the United Way, Victoria Bar Association and McPherson Foundation; chair of the Pacific Racing Association and the working committee of the B.C. Festival of the Arts; and membership of the Saanich Police Board.  In these positions, he and his family have quietly supported numerous community projects, including the Burnside-Gorge Community Association, the development of the Galloping Goose Trail, the creation of Cecilia Cove Park and the donation of Lochside Park to the city of Saanich.

Mr. Jawl is an honorary governor of the Victoria Foundation and the recipient of an honorary citizen award from the City of Victoria.
