David Black

Dr. David Black is the faculty-elected member of the board, elected to serve a three-year term from April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2022.

Black is a communication theorist and historian with expertise in media and cultural theory, interpersonal communication, communication history, technology criticism and political communication. He is interested in various practical forms of media production, especially as they relate to using media to teach theory and in support of social justice issues. He is drawn to social marketing and political communication, and to research topics with a historical and critical imagination. Black is interested in building relationships between communication programs and the professional community.

Before joining Royal Roads in 2003, Black taught in the communication studies program at Wilfrid Laurier University from 1991 to 2003. He’s published one book, The Politics of Enchantment: Romanticism, Media and Cultural Studies, and articles on the history of communication theory. Black is frequently called upon to comment in the media on various communication topics.

Black earned his BA in English literature and anthropology from Wilfrid Laurier University, a MA in cultural anthropology from the University of Chicago and a PhD in social and political thought, specializing in media and cultural theory, from York University. He was nominated for Royal Roads’ Kelly Outstanding Teacher award in 2005, and won the award in 2007.
