Partners in Leadership Education

The School of Leadership Studies wishes to thank Canadian Advanced Air Mobility (CAAM) for their engagement as our 2021-1 Winter cohort Leadership Challenge™ sponsoring organization.

The purpose of the Leadership Challenge™ is to create a mutually beneficial learning experience by bringing together a local organization and graduate students in the first year of their Master of Arts in Leadership. To create this learning experience, we are grateful to JR Hammond, Founder and CEO of CAAM, and to Teara Fraser, CEO and Founder of Iskwew Air, one of 17 founding partners in CAAM, and also one of our Leadership faculty members. Iskwew Air is involved, as Teara has stated, because of CAAM’s commitment to “decolonizing, decarbonizing, and transforming the aviation industry in service of a better future” (see here) The School of Leadership Studies thanks JR Hammond from the CAAM Team for his generous commitment of time and voluntary engagement in this activity.

CAAM is a national non-profit consortium and based in Vancouver, whose challenge is to bring all of Canada together to build an aviation and transportation future that is zero emission, equitable, resilient, inclusive, accessible, and intermodal. This is a complex, interconnected, multifaceted, and multistakeholder ecosystem, with a systems-wide approach focussed on connections and relationships. Building upon the worldwide development of new electric battery technology and new hydrogen fuel cell technologies, air mobility applies these technologies to vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft, short takeoff and landing (STOL) aircraft and conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) aircraft. The CAAM mission is to create a unified national strategy for Advanced Air Mobility with regional implementation across Canada to move people, goods and services to benefit residents, businesses and emergency responders in both urban and rural communities.

This learning experience created a precious opportunity for learners to exercise their leadership learning and competencies.

In his response to our student presentations, JR stated:

What was going through my mind and somatic system [as I was listening to the presentations] was a combo of moving from excitement, laughter, and trying to get notes, I was feeling a tingle down my spine knowing I was being reinvigorated … What the [student] groups created takes it beyond air mobility: we are here is to improve the planet… this unlocks a core part of what I will be taking back to CAAM”
