One of the most famous stories is that of Lord Rama, who returned to his kingdom of Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and defeating the demon king Ravana. The people of Ayodhya lit rows of oil lamps to welcome him, which is why Diwali is often celebrated with lights, lanterns, and fireworks. Diwali also holds significance in other Indian religions.
