Steenkamp on the power of flags

Royal Roads University President Philip Steenkamp, who holds a PhD in History, discusses the power and meaning of flags in the past and today, in an opinion article published in the Vancouver Sun.

“A flag in itself isn’t intrinsically special. But when we imbue flags with meaning and significance, with values and identity — that’s when they become important. That meaning can often be profound…

“A flag can include and embrace, or it can exclude and divide. It can be a source of healing and comfort, or it can wound and threaten. But it’s ultimately our actions that lend a flag its meaning.”
