Parking zones

Vehicles on campus must be parked in a designated parking zone. Parking zones are marked with signage as follows:

  • General parking — Vehicles parked here must display a valid parking permit or slip from a meter.
  • Reserved parking — The eight parking spots in front of Hatley Castle are reserved 24/7, including holidays.
  • Service vehicle spaces — These spaces can only be used by RRU and contractor service vehicles.

In addition, the following zones are marked by signage:

  • Passenger drop-off zones — You can stop briefly in these zones to drop off or pick up passengers. Vehicles must not be left unattended and must follow the posted time limit.
  • Loading zones — There are various loading zones on campus. Look for signage to indicate how long you can stay parked in a loading zone, usually no more than 15 minutes.

Overnight parking

Overnight parking is permitted in the Central parking lot only, with prior written approval from Campus Security, and only for the following groups:

  1. registered guests staying in on-campus accommodations
  2. university employees, students, contractors or visitors who are required to leave their vehicle overnight
  3. commercial vehicles that arrive at night and are delivering goods the following day as part of approved procurement/shipment.

A parking permit is required.

Motorcycle, moped and scooter parking

Motorcycles, mopeds and scooters must be parked in parking lots. Parking spaces have been designated for these vehicles; if none is available, park in a regular parking spot.

Accessible parking

Accessible parking is available for individuals with a temporary or permanent disability.

Accessible parking spaces are reserved 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Pay parking rates apply, and you must display your accessible parking permit. An accessible permit is not valid in restricted zones or reserved parking spaces.

If there are no accessible parking spaces available, you can use your permit to park in any space in a parking zone. Phone Campus Security at 250.391.2525 if you need help getting to your work location or classroom.

Apply for accessible parking

Students, faculty, staff and contractors can apply for an accessible parking permit online.

There are two ways to do this:

  • Apply for a permit by providing your current, valid accessible provincial parking permit information.
  • Submit an accessible parking request for temporary accessible parking. The temporary permit is valid for six months. If you need temporary accessible parking after six months, you'll need to reapply.

Visitors can request an accessible parking permit in person at the Welcome Desk.

Parking tickets

If you receive a parking ticket, you can pay the fine at the Welcome Desk

Electric and hybrid vehicle charging

Electric and hybrid vehicle parking includes the use of the charging stations on campus. These spaces are designated solely for electric or hybrid vehicle charging for a maximum of four hours per day per vehicle.

At the end of the four-hour time limit or once your vehicle is charged if it takes less time, you must move your vehicle to a general parking space, so others can use the charging station.

We have 14 public electric vehicle charging stations in the following locations:

  • four in the newly opened parking plaza out front of the Sequoia Building
  • four west of the Sherman Jen Building
  • two in the West Parking lot across from the Dogwood Auditorium
  • four behind the Nixon Building

Some charging stations can charge two vehicles at once, while others are single vehicles.

Regular pay parking rates apply.

Bicycle parking

You're not required to register or apply for a permit to park your bicycle. Bikes can only be parked in bike racks or designated areas on campus.

Bike racks are located outside all campus buildings. Covered bike racks are located in front of the Grant and Millward buildings, between the Grant and Nixon buildings, and in front of the Recreation Centre.

Keep the following items in mind:

  • You're responsible for locking your bike and making sure you don't damage any property where you lock it.
  • If you park or store a bike inside a campus building in a way that affects safety or pedestrian, building, emergency, roadway or parking access, it will be removed and you may be fined.
