“After living abroad and learning another language, I knew I wanted to work with an international audience and continue to use my Spanish skills. My goal of combining PR and Spanish was realized when I was hired to be the Communications and Events Coordinator for the Office of International Education at Mount Royal University. After working within the field for several years, travelling and working with various countries, I decided to take my experiences and apply for the Master’s program at Royal Roads.
In today’s interconnected world, understanding cultures and knowing how to be interculturally competent is necessary. An interdisciplinary approach coupled with the shared knowledge of the cohort provides a broad spectrum of intercultural and international communication.
I am now the Regional Manager for Asia/Pacific and Africa for the University of Calgary International Office. Within this position I am responsible for hosting incoming delegations, briefing executive members of various cultural protocols, and negotiating contracts for partnership universities. Our office recently opened a Global Research Site in Beijing, and my experience from the MAIIC residency in China gave me an advantage; I was able to understand various cultural values and business practices that were necessary for collaboration with our Chinese counterparts.”
