Bio (Deborah Zornes)
Education and Technology
As director of research services at Royal Roads University, Dr. Deborah Zornes works with faculty to develop high quality research proposals and works with students with a focus on developing high quality research proposals. Zornes has 20 years’ experience in research administration and has taught for four years. Her research focuses on the role of the university in society, research impact and research evaluation. She is active in two research projects: Increasing effectiveness in sustainability research: A comparative analysis of applied and transdisciplinary research projects led by Brian Belcher; and the Evaluative Study of Action Research (ESAR) project led by Eileen Piggot-Irvine.
As director, Zornes is involved in strategic planning; policy development; external representation and liaison; research development, innovation and commercialization and knowledge transfer; supporting faculty research; demonstrating the value of research; fostering and promoting multi-sector and multi-disciplinary research; developing and reviewing contracts; developing mechanisms for tracking and evaluating research outcomes and their alignment with university goals; researching and identifying new and existing funding opportunities and overseeing financial obligations for grants and contracts.
Zornes holds certificates in Human Resource Management/Labour Relations (2000) and Administration (1999) from Athabasca University; a Bachelor of Administration from Athabasca University (2001); a Master of Arts in Integration Studies with dual specializations in Work, Organizations and Leadership and in Global Change (2004) and a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Victoria (2012).
