President Steenkamp: Join us to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Month
Happy National Indigenous Peoples Month!
June 1 marks the beginning of a month dedicated to honouring the history, culture and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.
To me, it’s a reminder to reflect on our connection to the land, and on our responsibilities to the original Peoples who have cared for it since time immemorial. It’s also a time for community, for celebration — and for both learning and unlearning.
There are so many ways to do this important work. A great place to start is by visiting the RRU Library’s in-person or digital displays to browse resources in Indigenous art, identity, histories and stories.
On Friday, June 20, Royal Roads is one of 20 partner organizations co-hosting an incredible community event. On behalf of all of us, I wanted to share the video message above and warmly welcome you to join us.
The celebrations include traditional performances, a canoe landing protocol practice, traditional plant walks on Charlie's Trail with Cowichan Elder Kenneth Elliott, crafts and much more. Food vendors will offer a variety of fare for purchase, from piping hot bannock to frozen treats and this year, the vendor market will again offer an array of creations for purchase by Indigenous artisans and makers.
I encourage you to visit our National Indigenous Peoples Month and Day webpage to find more ways to engage all month long – from community events to resources and more.
