Associate director of Human Rights and Accessibility at Royal Roads Alejandro Campos-Garcia, shares insights to make classrooms more supportive for all students.
Insight 1: Honour diverse learning styles
"Each student has a unique way of absorbing information," says Campos-Garcia. Some are visual learners; others absorb information by listening and many by doing. He emphasizes the importance of offering different ways for students to engage — through group discussions, writing a reflection, creating a video or expressing themselves through art. By embracing these approaches, educators are empowering students to succeed in a way that works best for them.
Insight 2: Flexibility Fosters equity in learning

Campos-Garcia advocates for offering flexibility with how and when assessments are completed, ensuring students get the space and time they need. “This kind of flexibility helps students feel more confident and supported, leading to better outcomes for everyone,” he says.
