Students in Royal Roads University’s Bachelor of Arts in Professional Communication program say routine and self-discipline are key to managing work, school, and life. Many are adult learners balancing full-time jobs, parenting, and academic deadlines while studying online.

Samantha Laliberty, a student and parent, said a strict schedule keeps her on track. She uses a physical day planner to write out weekly deadlines and has turned her dining table into a workspace so she can stay present for her children.

“You can make anything work using a little creativity and determination,” Laliberty said.

Time management tools such as calendars, task lists, and online platforms help students structure their days. Bessie Jung, who works full-time and has a family, said she studies after work on weekdays to protect weekends for family time.

“I try to do schoolwork at least two hours a day after work so I can have some quality time with my family on weekends,” she said.

Both students said communication and flexibility are essential for group assignments in an online setting. Jung emphasized the importance of keeping teammates informed through collaborative tools like Google Docs and shared calendars.

“Always let other teammates know what you are up to, what you have completed, and what the next step is,” she said. “It helps everyone stay on track.”

Laliberty agreed, adding that her professional experience has taught her that listening and kindness build stronger teams.

“A key component is being kind and remembering that everyone is trying their best,” she said. “Having open communication leads not only to better teamwork but also helps your team bond when facing potential challenges.”

She said this approach applies to leadership as well.

“The most successful leaders exercise active listening, consider everyone’s opinions, and understand it is okay to make mistakes. Oftentimes, it is those mistakes that inspire new ideas.”

Both students noted that burnout is a real concern for remote learners. Jung said she resets by spending time in nature, especially in the mountains. Laliberty emphasized the importance of recognizing when to pause and regroup.

“Remind yourself how blessed you are to get to learn,” she said. “You can do hard things.”

Royal Roads’ online programs are designed for working professionals and adult learners, offering flexibility to study from anywhere. Students say success in this model depends on self-motivation, intentional planning, and a strong support system.
