Join us Weds. Sept. 24 between 12:15 and 2 p.m. for a tour of Indigenous learning landmarks around the Royal Roads University Colwood campus as a step towards building relationships with Indigenous Elders, educators and artists who have shared their knowledge of the land and ways of learning, being, and knowing in a holistic variety of expressive modes.
This event is free and open to the RRU community as well as the general public.
Photos and other digital recordings will be taken at this public event and will be shared with the RRU community. Please let your tour guides know if you prefer not to be in any photos or videos.
You are welcome to join and leave the tour at any point in time as needed to meet personal commitments. The tour will begin at the Library. If you want to join the tour while it’s in progress, look for the group wearing orange shirts at or near one of these locations during these time blocks. We’ll be travelling from Central Campus, to West Campus, to Lower Campus, and back to the University Drive ‘main drag’ as shown on this Campus Map.
Itinerary of landmark learning locations
12:15 – 1 p.m.: Button Blanket (Library), All My Relations art installation (Dogwood), and Indigenous Medicine Garden (Farm).
1:15 – 2 p.m.: Sneq’wa e’lun (Blue Heron House), União mural (Boat House), and the interpretive audio wheel at Charlie’s Trail and College Drive.
A detailed tour poster with information about the significance of the embedded knowledge in each of the landmark locations as shared by the Indigenous artists, authors, and educators will be provided beforehand through a variety of RRU communication channels and during the tour.
We booked the six-seater golf cart to make the tour more accessible given the strenuous RRU landscape. After the physical tour, we will also share the informational tour poster, a curated selection of learning resources, and a photo story padlet of the tour through RRU media channels for people who study or work remotely or can’t make it to campus for the in-person event.
Please send an email to the Diversity Action Group to register for this event. Please dress for the weather and landscape conditions.
