Elder Norman Fleury is a Metis Elder with the University of Saskatchewan and Metis Nation Saskatchewan. Originally from St. Lazare, Manitoba Elder Fleury has been involved in the Metis Movement for 55 years as a leader and promoter of the Metis Nation. Like his ancestors, Elder Fleury speaks many languages, but his passion is in keeping the Michif distinction, culture, legends, stories, music, dance, songs, beliefs, and history alive. He taught the first accredited courses at Brandon University and the University of Saskatchewan as well as created the first Michif dictionary in Canada as well as numerous other resources. His teachers were his maternal grandparents and his mother who left her family at 108, 12 years ago. His grandma was his inspiration and teacher. Together they communicated solely in Michif. In this Elder Fleury found a balance, lived, practiced those ways and continues to teach and follow the old ways.
