Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL)

About

HVL is one of the largest higher education institutions in Norway with a student population of over 16,000. They have five campuses located in Bergen, Førde, Haugesund, Sogndal and Stord with each campus offering a uniquely Norwegian experience. Bergen, the main campus, is the second-largest city in Norway and the gateway to the famous fjords.

The exchange

Students will be studying Outdoor Education and Nordic Friluftsliv at the Sogndal campus. Sogndal is a picturesque community with everything located within a 10-minute walking distance. The landscape around the region consists of fjords, mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, rivers, lakes and so much more. Students will find themselves immersed in the outdoor region during their exchange due to the numerous excursions planned as part of the program. Kayaking, glacier tours and hiking trips will highlight and build upon your leadership and organization skills.

Accommodation

HVL assists incoming exchange students in their search for housing. Accommodation options are close to campus and normally include internet and electricity as part of the monthly fee. Expect to pay around 3,500 NOK or $550 CAD per month.

Student life

Around 2,500 students make up the vibrant student population in Sogndal. There are many student organizations operating in Sogndal you can join that can help you participate in campus activities while studying abroad. Sogndal has an excellent reputation as an outdoorsy region, but the town has an urban feel with shopping, cafes, pubs and a cinema. A highlight of the semester is student week, where bands come to town and put on a fun week of live music.
