Partners in Leadership Education

The School of Leadership Studies wishes to thank Ching Tien and EGRC for their engagement as our 2020 Cohort’s Leadership Challenge™ sponsoring organization.

The purpose of the Leadership Challenge™ is to create a mutually beneficial learning experience for an international organization and graduate students in the first year of their Master of Arts in Global Leadership. To create this learning experience, some inquiry with the organizational sponsor is necessary and we are grateful to Ching Tien, President of EGRC for their commitment of time and voluntary engagement in this activity.

The EGRC is a Canadian not-for-profit organization focused on addressing the gender gap in education for girls in rural China who would otherwise be left behind and not receive the opportunities a good education can provide. EGRC’s website describes that the High School Sponsorship Program it offers addresses the issue that in most of China, compulsory education stops at grade nine and many families cannot afford the cost of a high school education.  Only 40% of students graduating from middle school are able to continue on to high school.  Girls not able to attend high school are likely to either marry early or work to support her family or male siblings continuing their education. EGRC began this program in 2012 to address this ongoing issue. EGRC’s website also explains EGRC’s University Sponsorship Program. This program has been active since 2005 and funds up to $1,500 USD for girls and young women attending university in 90 institutions located in 30 cities in China. The programs are intended to go beyond simply providing tuition. Rather, the goal is to advance educations and careers.

To support the EGRC's mission, the Global Leaderships students set up a gofundme page, engaging beyond the project to raise close to the amount needed for tuition for one student for one year.

The Leadership Challenge™ is a cornerstone of the first residency of the Global Leadership programs and the Master of Arts in Leadership program. For more information or to inquire about becoming a potential sponsor, please contact us at leadership.admin@royalroads.ca.
