As part of Communication Matters, a quarterly series hosted by the School of Communication and Culture, we were pleased to invite Sheridan McVean to speak to our BA in Professional Communication students about starting and growing a professional communication consulting company.

“Many Royal Roads professional communication students and alumni with entrepreneurial and innovative DNA are considering their own communication start-ups or already have one,” says McVean. “This session of Communication Matters is intended to spark and encourage them by providing practical tips and approaches to becoming and improving your work as a consultant, and managing communication for non-profits, governments and businesses.”

McVean has more than 30 years’ experience as a consultant in professional communication, working for several Canadian governments, non-profit organizations, and small, medium and enterprise-sized clients. His well-known clients have included McCain Foods, WestJet, Microsoft, Deloitte, Cisco Systems and the governments of Canada and Alberta. In addition to having his own communication consulting company, he worked with Hill + Knowlton Strategies, a global public relations and public affairs company.

McVean is active in two professional communication associations: the International Association of Business Communicators and the Canadian Public Relations Society. He holds the Accredited in Public Relations professional certification and is a Fellow of the Canadian Public Relations Society.

At Royal Roads University, McVean teaches Communication Planning and Stakeholder Engagement in the Bachelor of Arts in Professional Communication program and is a guest lecturer in the Masters of Arts in Professional Communication program.
