Presentation, research strategizing and networking at the 82nd Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management

Frances Jorgensen received a Research and Professional Development grant to research the impact of presenteeism on workplace accidents and injuries and the impact of social stressors.

In this paper, we focus on the influence of presenteeism on workplace accidents and injuries (WAI) of frontline service employees (FSEs) and whether job characteristics and organizational factors moderate this influence. We tested our model using survey data (N=298) collected in Canada. Results from hierarchical linear regressions supported our notion that presenteeism is positively associated with WAI. Moreover, we found that customer-related social stressors moderated this positive relationship, such that FSEs engaging in presenteeism and experiencing customer-related social stressors were more likely to experience WAI. Further, safety climate and emotional labor moderated the relationship between presenteeism and WAI.
