Nelson Chan’s term as a governor has been extended, allowing him to remain in the chair and chancellor role until March 31, 2025.

“Nelson Chan has shared his passion, energy and leadership as Royal Roads University’s chancellor since 2020, and we are grateful he will continue to fulfil this role for an additional year,” says Philip Steenkamp, president of Royal Roads. “He has been integral in championing the creative innovations we’ve implemented to navigate the dynamic landscape of post-secondary education. We appreciate his unwavering dedication to Canada’s university for changemakers.”

Chan, who was appointed to the board of governors in 2017, began his term as chair and chancellor at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, leading the university’s board through the global shutdown to post-pandemic recovery and beyond. His support of the university’s work towards truth and reconciliation, inclusion, climate action, and the new West Shore campus are highlights from his four years in the role. The extension of his role brings continuity and stability as these projects continue to progress.

“I am deeply grateful my term has been extended and that my fellow board members have reappointed me as chair and chancellor,” says Chan. “I am committed and honoured to have more time in this role to continue advocacy, and to support the work of the university. It has been an absolute pleasure to serve Royal Roads, and support its students, faculty and research. The University truly lives up to its promise of inspiring people with the courage to transform the world, and I am happy to play a small part in that.”

During Chan’s extended term, he will continue to steward the Board of Governors and facilitate decisions and outcomes that ensure the ongoing success of Royal Roads. He will also confer degrees and award diplomas and certificates granted by the University.
