President Steenkamp: Celebrating 30 years of Black History Month in Canada

February is Black History Month in Canada, and Royal Roads University is proud to join the celebrations by recognizing the contributions of Black people and the many ways they enrich communities across the country, including in our RRU community.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Black History Month in Canada, made possible by the leadership of Dr. Jean Augustine. An educator and community champion, she made history as the first Black woman elected to Canada’s Parliament, and it was her motion that led to the official recognition of Black History Month nationwide.

Over the next month, I invite you to join the celebrations. As Dr. Augustine has rightly noted, “Black history is Canadian history.” And it’s a history that continues to shape our country, our institutions and our shared future.

Royal Roads’ Black History Month webpage is a great starting point, featuring resources, stories, community events and more. This year, we invited Black students at RRU to share their reflections on what it means to be Black in Canada. Take a moment to hear their perspectives.

Also, mark your calendars for Wednesday, February 18 when we’ll welcome Dr. Yabome Gilpin-Jackson, SFU vice-president, People, Equity and Inclusion as this year’s keynote speaker. Hosted by RRU’s Office of Human Rights and Accessibility, led by Alejandro Campos-Garcia, Dr. Gilpin-Jackson will present on Black Legacies in Canada and the Academy. We are so grateful for the Black scholars, students, researchers, activists, staff, and alumni whose work, leadership and lived experiences continue to enrich our community, classrooms and this country.
