Four members join Royal Roads Board of Governors
The Royal Roads University Board of Governors is in a period of renewal. In the last year, four new members joined the board and an election is upcoming for a new student representative.
Sage Berryman and Geoff Pearce have joined the board through appointment by the Lieutenant Governor in Council.
Berryman is co-chief executive officer of the Ralmax Group of Companies, a diversified group of 10 industrial businesses in Victoria. She is the founder of the Prosperity Pollinator movement, which helps bring sustainable, impact-based companies into the areas that need them most. She was recognized by Business in Vancouver with a BC’s Top 40 under 40 award in 2015. Berryman holds a Master of Business Administration from Queen’s University.
Pearce had a 30-year career in local BC government administration, including in Langford and Whistler. Following his retirement he consulted for 13 years and was the author of the feasibility reports on commuter train service from Langford to Victoria. Pearce is an active community member, serving as a director of a golf club society, president of the Whistler Rotary Club, parish councillor of a church, chair of a strata council, chair of advisory committees and commodore of a sailing co-op. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Business and is a chartered secretary and administrator.
New board members representing Royal Roads faculty and students are Assoc. Prof. David Black and Nadine Penalagan.
Black has taught in the School of Communication and Culture as a core faculty member since 2003. A popular political pundit for local and national media, Black is a communication theorist and historian with expertise in media and cultural theory, interpersonal communication, communication history, technology criticism and political communication. He holds a PhD in Social and Political Thought from York University, a Master of Arts in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Chicago and a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Anthropology from Wilfrid Laurier University.
Penalagan, a student in the Master of Arts in Leadership program, joined the board in October 2018. She is a business management professional with more than 20 years of experience working with educational institutions, not-for-profit organizations, businesses and government agencies.
Penalagan’s one-year term ends Oct. 1, with a board election for her successor planned for September. Those interested in running for the position can contact Student Services for more information.
The Board of Governors is also saying farewell and thank you to member Doug Kobayashi, whose term ended July 31. He will continue to serve the Royal Roads community as external member of the Program and Research Council.
