Join us for this interactive webinar series as we critically examine how leadership, communication, and sport intersect to influence our culture and impact social change. Sport has been a platform for addressing crises of power, gender, and race, not to mention a global pandemic, and has brought into focus a need for change. Political, cultural, humanitarian, and health pressures have challenged the sports community to rethink the role and power of sport within society.

In Episode 14 of our Sport, Leadership and Social Change series, host Dr. Jennifer Walinga welcomes Duff Gibson, author, firefighter, and World and Olympic gold medalist. Gibson’s first book, The Tao of Sport, draws on the three decades Gibson has spent in the “hotbed of Olympic sport” as both an athlete and coach, looking at the commonalities shared by elite athletes and how to draw them out. Gibson is a world and Olympic champ in skeleton and won the Olympic gold for Canada at the age of 39 before announcing his retirement. He coached the national skeleton team and helped lead six athletes to podium finishes at the world level. He also founded Dark Horse Athletic, a multisport youth program and is a captain with the Calgary Fire Department. All of which has allowed him to develop his theories on not only what makes high-performance athletes tick but also the good and not-so-good ways to motivate them, something he hopes proves useful to athletes, coaches, and parents alike.
