Sunedria Nicholls-Gaertner joined Royal Roads University as Team Coach in May 2024. Her connection to Royal Roads is both professional and personal, having proudly completed her Master of Arts in Leadership at the University in 2021. This dual perspective, as both an alumnus and a staff member, has provided her with a comprehensive understanding of institutional operations, student success drivers, and the intricate balance required for organizational excellence.

Before joining Royal Roads, Sunedria was part of a vibrant community at the International Film School of Cologne in Germany for over 24 years, with the last 12 years serving as Head of Studies. In this role, she gained valuable experience on oversight boards and working committees aimed at improving and integrating student services and faculty perspectives to support a thriving learning community. This experience provided a unique perspective on the interconnectedness of various units and the complex systemic challenges and opportunities inherent in non-profit higher education. She also served on the Board for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (SCEDI) within the Global Network of Film Schools (CILECT), which instilled an appreciation for cultural awareness, agile problem-solving, and the importance of inclusive and diplomatic communication.

As a Team Coach at Royal Roads University, Sunedria has worked closely with program offices and faculty across the University’s academic landscape. Her work as a Team Coach involves collaboration with various units within Student Services, including Student Engagement, Accessibility Services, Counselling, and the CLD, fostering a strong appreciation of the people and support structures Royal Roads has assembled to ensure student success.

On the Board of Governors, Sunedria Nicholls-Gaertner aims to provide a collaborative, informed presence, ensuring staff perspectives are heard and contributing to the University’s growth during times of change. Her approach is guided by a diplomatic mindset, using a coaching perspective to ask questions and offer feedback that supports the internal and external growth of the University during times of change and disruption.. Sunedria is eager to engage with others who are passionate about the Royal Roads community. She believes her experience and dedication will make a valuable contribution to the Board, ensuring that staff perspectives are thoughtfully considered in shaping the University’s future.
