Staff Giving at RRU: Sometimes you don’t have to choose!

Nancy

We don’t notice the small amount of money deducted from our paycheck, but this same amount creates ripples in the world.

A strong desire to support both Indigenous students and students with emergency need is what inspired a Royal Roads staff member to sign up for payroll giving and give to two funds instead of one.

Nancy Prevost-Maurice, an Education Specialist at Royal Roads, says she was pleased to learn she could split her payroll deduction and give to both of the funds that spoke to her heart – the Indigenous Scholars Grant and the Life Happens Bursary.

“I want to be an ally with reconciliation and believe that our Indigenous community members deserve the best in life. I appreciate learning with and from Indigenous students on campus…The Life Happens Bursary made me reflect on my own journey and how $1,000 can sometimes help so much when life is hard.”

The Indigenous Scholars Grant helps Indigenous students in a variety of ways including supporting them in traveling to connect with elders in their home communities. Prevost-Maurice’s contributions to the Life Happens Bursary help students when, despite their best efforts, “life happens” and an unforeseen challenge temporarily gets in the way of their studies.

Prevost-Maurice is a RRU award recipient herself, having received $1,000 from the Sustainability Impact Award to help her small business introduce reusable coffee cups to Habitat.

“Staff members contribute to RRU in so many ways, not only through their work, but by choosing RRU as a partner in helping them to create the changes they feel are important – whether that’s student awards or climate action” says Advancement Manager Amy Hinrichs. “I hear from so many people that, as their circumstances change throughout life and they can give back in new ways, their time at RRU is one of the first things they think of. That generosity of spirit in action is part of what makes this place so special.”

For Prevost-Maurice, also a current student in the MA in Climate Action Leadership, the decision to support fellow students through payroll giving was easy.

“We don’t notice the small amount of money deducted from our paycheck, but this same amount creates ripples in the world. I immediately signed up when I learned how easy it was to take a few dollars from my paycheck to give back. I have been fortunate in my life, and it is our citizen’s task to help others when we can.”
