Bio (Tamara Leary)

Tamara Leary joined Royal Roads University in the fall of 2015 as the program head for the Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration and Leadership (MAHEAL) program and in 2018 she accepted the appointment of school director for the School of Education and Technology. She enjoys teaching in the MAHEAL program and draws upon her many years as a leader and practitioner in student affairs to offer students an engaging curriculum and learning experience. Leary’s areas of expertise and research interests include: student services, the scholarship of Canadian higher education administration and leadership, scholar-practitioner transitions, strategic enrolment management and internationalization.
Building on her early career as a social worker, Leary joined the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) Department of Student Services in 1999 as a program coordinator for an inclusive post-secondary education program. In more than 12 years at UPEI, she held a variety of leadership roles in the department, including the director’s role from 2007 to 2012. Leary began teaching with Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2012 until to August 2015 in the online Master of Post-Secondary Education program.
Leary holds a Doctorate of Education with a specialization in higher education administration and leadership from the University of Calgary, a Masters of Adult Education from St. Francis Xavier University (2002), a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Victoria (1995) and a Bachelor of Arts (Sociology Major) from the University of Prince Edward Island (1990).
