Business

Sheila Carruthers is a Certified Management Consultant and an associate faculty member in the School of Business MBA program for the management consulting specialization. She delivers courses for Canadian Association of Management Consultants (CMC-Canada) and for the University of Calgary. Her specializations are management consulting standards and practices, business ethics, board governance, public relations, strategic communication and corporate social responsibility (CSR). She balances her consulting work with training professionals and assessing ethical behaviour exams and is thrilled to be back at Royal Roads University, where she completed her MBA. Carruthers is best known for skillfully building initiatives that help businesses thrive by integrating sustainability and social value into the business model. She has worked in banking and finance, government (diplomatic service), non-profits and charitable foundations.

Experience

Carruthers’ work has progressed from business administrator in executive offices for communications and legal departments to being the corporate spokesperson for a multinational company and managing large charitable foundations and corporate sponsorships. She switched careers to be an independent management consultant in 2001 to better balance her work and family responsibilities. Carruthers is a tool and template master and has stories from the office ‘trenches’ to share to make learning a fun experience!

Carruthers has served on local, national and international non-profit boards and committees for most of her adult life. Currently, she serves on the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Executive Committee as Chair of its Audit and Risk Committee and as the board liaison for its Ethics Committee. She mentors CMC candidates and young professionals. In her spare time, she is a scout leader and avid reader, and will find any excuse to go ocean kayaking.
