Slick on planning for disaster in the age of extreme climate events

The reality of climate change and extreme weather events is settling in, with governments including the issue as part of budget planning. Royal Roads Assoc. Prof. and Program Head of the Master of Arts in Disaster and Emergency Management Jean Slick spoke with the Canadian Press after the release of the BC budget about what planning for future natural disasters needs to entail.

Here is some of what she had to say:

“…she said the human element that shouldn’t be missed is that governments are allowing people to build on flood plains or in fire zones.

‘What we really want to see going forward is that we take action to stop creating disaster risks.’"

Slick also said that BC is a leader in recognizing that climate change is a factor in the natural threats we face, including fire and floods.
