RRU in the media: BC’s prosperity depends on strong post-secondaries

In a recent opinion piece for the Vancouver Sun, Royal Roads University President Philip Steenkamp, Pacific Association of Canadian Institutes and Universities Chair Jeff Zabudsky, and BC Colleges Chair Laurie Waye, argue more support for post-secondary institutions will help us address the great challenges of our time.
Here is an excerpt from the article:
“BC’s academic researchers are working to solve the most urgent challenges of our time, developing innovative solutions in health care, housing, food security and the climate emergency. Other students are retraining for new careers or gaining skills through short, flexible programs while they continue to work.
“Employers across every industry rely on these graduates — to the province’s enormous benefit. This year alone, BC was able to fast-track 18 critical energy and mining projects thanks in part to the availability of a skilled, local workforce.
“To its credit, the provincial government is working with institutions to advocate for more flexibility from Ottawa. But the damage is already being done, and without decisive action, the effects will be long-lasting.
“BC has the talent, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit to thrive in the decades ahead. But that future depends on student access to our public post-secondary system. We cannot afford to let it erode when we need it most.”
