Preview of Pride Conversation with Philip Steenkamp

A photo of President Philip Steenkamp against a backdrop of blue sky and Hatley Castle looks out and smiles. Behind that on the banner, event details found in the post and a ribboning of the Inclusive Pride flag colours weaved together.

Inclusion initiatives and 2SLGBTQI+ rights are facing increasing challenges across the higher education landscape in North America. In the United States, a nationwide campaign has successfully led to the development of anti-EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) executive orders and bills that ban or limit programs, training, and offices in public organizations at both the federal and state levels.

In Canada, there has been some similar mobilization against EDI. Advocacy for prioritizing freedom of speech and academic freedom over identity-based human rights is becoming mainstream. In Alberta, a proposal has been made to eliminate EDI programs at the post-secondary level. Protests against the inclusion of sexual orientation and gender identity content in the K-12 education system have occurred in several provinces.

As institutions in Canada consider how to respond to these pressures, Royal Roads University invites the community to a timely and thought-provoking conversation with RRU President Philip Steenkamp.

In dialogue with Alejandro Campos-Garcia, associate director of Human Rights and Accessibility, President Steenkamp will reflect on what it means to be a gay university president today. The discussion will explore the risks of silence from leadership and the power of visibility in advancing equity and inclusion.

"Leadership is not just about policy — it's about presence. When we show up visibly and vocally for inclusion, we send a powerful message of hope and belonging to every student, faculty and staff member, and future leader," says Steenkamp.

Everyone is welcome to attend on campus or join the online session.

"Whether you’re a student, educator, leader, or community member, this dialogue invites reflection on how we each contribute to a more inclusive culture,” says Campos-Garcia.
