President Steenkamp's Convocation message: The power of raising your hand
When we were young, we were taught to raise our hands to ask questions. Later, we raised them to volunteer, to serve and sometimes, hardest of all, to ask for help. Over time, I’ve learned it's also my best advice on how to lead — in fact, it’s how leadership begins. It’s about raising your hand when things are difficult. Showing up for others and for yourself.
There’s real power in that simple act, but it also takes courage, the same courage our Fall 2025 graduates showed when they chose to begin, and to complete, their programs. That’s the message I shared with them today.
