POCKET CLASS: Don’t gamble with sports values
When it comes to sports, cultural integrity is as – if not more important – than physical training, says Dr. Jennifer Walinga.
“When we gamble with integrity, we risk losing what sport offers – to athletes and to society as a whole,” says the communications expert and sports researcher.
“Think of a ref who allows cheating on the field. The game soon loses its meaning and they lose control of the game.
“Or gambling. It might boost fan interest and ticket sales, but it can lead to insider betting and game-rigging, as we’ve recently seen in the NBA.”
In her RRU Pocket Class, the double Olympic gold medalist brings lived experience to her perspective on excellence and the standards required to sustain it.
