On Thursday, May 6, 2021 at 4 p.m., join Royal Roads President Philip Steenkamp as he hosts our 25th Anniversary Changemakers Speakers Series. Victoria-based Esi Edugyan will be our virtual guest. This talk will stream live on our Facebook and YouTube channels. Visit the Facebook event page.

Edugyan writes richly imagined and impeccably researched stories that illuminate complicated truths about race and belonging. The first Black woman to win the Scotiabank Giller Prize, Edugyan grew up the child of immigrant Ghanian parents in Calgary, AB.

Her most recent book, Washington Black, was named one of the best books of the year by The New York Times and was a finalist for the Man Booker Prize. Edugyan says of her book: “It’s about how do you try to live in the world when everything you know has been blood and violence and… you’re in a world that rejects you.”

The talk streams live on our Facebook channels and is free and open to attend.

Upcoming speakers in the series include Dr. Bonnie Henry, “Pandemic Perseverance” on June 8, 2021 and Gwynne Dyer this September.
