This bursary honours Maria C. Wilkie, who acted with grace and elegance in her life, helping others even in the face of adversity. She believed in equality, justice, women’s rights and education and was dedicated to lifelong learning. She had plans to pursue a master’s degree at Royal Roads, if time had allowed. She was determined to make a difference, as demonstrated by her career, which saw her in various roles at EB Eddy Forest Products, TimberWest, Victoria Symphony Orchestra, BC Ministry of Community, Aboriginal and Women’s Services, BC Ministry of Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism. She was also on the executive team at the BC Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation and ran her own business, the Maria C. Wilkie Consulting Company.

This bursary reflects her kindness and desire to help women make positive changes in their lives through education, by helping women enter, re-enter or advance in the workforce so they — like a hummingbird — can take flight.
