To the Royal Roads community, thank you from the bottom of our family’s hearts for loving and honouring my Mom

The legacy left by a long time Royal Roads staff member has inspired not only the creation of a new award in her memory, but an increased spirit of giving at the university – evidenced by the number of staff and faculty who have come forward to support the award.

Nearly $10,000 has been raised so far for the student award that honors the legacy of Cindy Brar who worked at the university for 25 years in multiple departments, served on the Board of Governors for three years and completed two Royal Roads graduate certificates and a master’s degree.

Cindy’s daughter Kirsten Amadu – who works in RRU's Professional and Continuing Studies Department – says it feels amazing, overwhelming and rather fitting her mom’s award – The Cindy Brar Memorial Award -- has seen so much support from the Royal Roads community.

“She was an incredible woman, and it’s comforting to see that so many people also felt that way about her and want to help honour her in this way. She loved RRU and the people that make it as special as it is. I know she would have been both embarrassed by the attention but also very proud of the impact this award is going to have.”

The Cindy Brar Memorial Award will support students who identify as women and have volunteered on a committee or board, with a preference for those with financial need.

Kirsten says this award will fulfill a mission her mother always had.

“In her retirement she had planned to help support and mentor individuals to re-enter the workforce or progress in their field of work by upgrading their skills and helping them gain access to education in order to empower themselves. To the Royal Roads community, thank you from the bottom of our family’s hearts for loving and honouring my Mom.”

You can make a one-time donation to The Cindy Brar Memorial Award or support the award by having small amounts transferred from each pay period by signing up for payroll giving.
