David Black

Candidate, Academic Council

Associate Professor

I've been a full-time faculty member in the School of Communication and Culture since June 2003. Prior to that, I taught in the Department of Communication Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University for 12 years.

While at Royal Roads, I've served in a number of roles, including a previous term on Academic Council and as faculty representative to the Board of Governors. I've also been active with RRUFA, serving as president, VP, union steward, and more significantly, as lead negotiator over four rounds (and a fifth as a team member) from 2007 to 2023.

My degrees are in English Literature (Laurier), cultural anthropology (Chicago), and social and political thought (York). I'm principally a theorist relating to communication, media and culture, but a generalist in my discipline, teaching and researching in associated fields including political communication, international communication, technology studies, and media history.

My hopes for Council are that we explore strengthening its contribution to governance at the University, notably as we proceed with the reorganization and its implications for other sources of collegial governance across the institution. Council will be more important in view of those changes, and a vital place for colleagues to act on their experience and understanding of the academic enterprise.
