Human Resources

Chris' full name is Christopher Smith Morin, although he goes by Chris. He holds a BSc in chemistry and geology from Queen's University and an MBA from the University of Calgary, where he completed a thesis on overcoming procrastination.

Chris earned his full CPHR designation in April 2021 and began working at Royal Roads in June 2022 as an HR Consultant in the HR Department. He is responsible for interacting with the CUPE and RRUFA members and providing support to Operations and Resilience, Research and academic departments.

For nearly 10 years, Chris has worked in the post-secondary education sector. He began in campus services and later in research services, in organizational behavior and organizational development at a business school. During this time, Chris presented at conferences for the Academy of Management, the Strategic Management Society and International Organizational Discourse.

Chris has also taught a full business diploma program for two years and worked as a campus director, where he increased the school's enrollment by 30% in one year by expanding its program offerings, establishing relationships with schools and social services in the community, developing admissions staff and expanding student support.

He has also provided HR services to a variety of organizations, including government ministries, not-for-profits, a municipal police service, an American management consultancy, a BC tech start-up, a BC construction services firm and a national sporting organization.

Chris is a member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Institute of Canada and is working toward a Qualified Mediator designation with a long-term goal of becoming an arbitrator and serving on the Labour Board.

Outside of work, Chris enjoys hiking, cycling, visiting beaches and breweries, and has been a novice powerlifter for six years. He wears his hair long and trains at the RRU rec center. He is also an avid cook. Originally from Ottawa, he lived in Alberta from 2006 to 2020 before moving to Victoria in January 2021.

When Chris was a teen, his family lived in New Zealand for a few years and a major motivator for settling in Victoria is to re-live those golden days of island life.

Chris is grateful to work at RRU. He is proud of the university’s commitments to EDI, Indigenization and Reconciliation. It is a special joy to live, learn and play on the land of the Xwsepsum (Esquimalt) and Lekwungen (Songhees) ancestors and families, and to have the opportunity to reflect on the history of the land and the circumstances that bring us all to where we are today.
