Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time and urgently needs dedicated, knowledgeable and passionate professionals to tackle it. The Graduate Certificate in Science and Policy of Climate Change, the first of its kind in Canada, will give you the knowledge and the practical, interdisciplinary education and skills you need to act on climate issues in diverse sectors. The applied know-how you attain with this certificate will open many career opportunities enabling you to make a difference now and in the future.
This one-year program consists of three graduate-level courses delivered online. You’ll learn about the leading-edge science and wide-ranging impacts of climate change as well as climate policy and governance at local to global levels. You’ll also work directly with an organization on a real-world project tackling climate change issues and developing solutions.
You can complete the certificate as a standalone credential or take individual courses as electives in some of our graduate programs. The certificate complements and builds upon related Royal Roads degree programs in natural and social sciences.
Upon completion, you’ll have the critical skills to respond to climate imperatives by applying science and developing policy innovations. You’ll know how to develop, implement and evaluate mitigation and adaptation strategies for moving forward. The program will also give you the knowledge and skills you need to effectively communicate climate issues to the public, policymakers and the media.

Climate Solutions Project
Climate Solutions is an experiential course that will give you the opportunity to work with your organization or an outside organization on a project addressing climate change. You can choose to work with an Indigenous community or organization, government department at any level, intergovernmental organization, private or public company, industrial company or NGO.
With the support of the course instructor and school faculty, you’ll organize your own placement. You’ll also work with a supervisor in the organization to collaborate and enhance your learning and applying interdisciplinary skills to on-the-ground solutions.
Working intimately and in partnership with an organization in the field will give you first-hand knowledge about the practical realities of addressing climate issues in real-time with expert practitioners. You’ll gain a new network of practitioners in the climate field and make an important contribution to your partner organization.
Partnership with ECO Canada
The Graduate Certificate in Science and Policy of Climate Change is offered as part of the partnership between Royal Roads University and the Environmental Careers Organization of Canada (ECO Canada), a non-profit organization that trains and certifies environmental professionals.
The content in the certificate reflects the National Occupation Standard (NOS) developed by ECO Canada. The NOS informs the skills and competencies required for the Environmental Professional in-training (EPt) Certification and the Environmental Professional (EP) Certification.
