From Kathrine Switzer’s first marathon race to Billie Jean King’s battle of the sexes victory, to the Yale crew’s naked protest over a lack of women’s showers, to Title IX, and soccer, basketball, hockey, and tennis athletes fighting for equal pay – women are scoring victories for equity; however, the stats on representation and resource allocation for women in sport remain dismal.

Join Dr. Jennifer Walinga on December 2nd for the second episode of our Sport, Leadership, and Social Change webinar series. In this episode, we will focus on Women, Leadership, and Sport and be joined by Nancy Hogshead-Makar and Kate Beirness, both leaders in gender equity who share their insights, voices, and actions to ensure that women have equal access, support, and respect in sport.

Our Panelists:

Nancy Hogshead-Makar - A two-time Olympian (1980-1984) and multi medalist in swimming, Nancy now works as an attorney, professor, author, and advocate for human rights, gender equity, and Safesport as CEO of Champion Women. She has enjoyed several legislative coups, including ensuring Title IX compliance by US colleges and enacting statutory changes to protect athletes from sexual abuse. As a leading member of the Committee to Restore Integrity to the US Olympic Committee, also known as ‘Team Integrity’, she has recently succeeded in getting the Empowering Olympic and Paralympic and Amateur Athletes Act of 2020 passed in congress.

Kate Beirness - Kate is a fitness advocate and sports anchor on TSN’s SportsCentre. She has hosted many marquee sports events, including TSN Olympic Morning in 2012, CBC Olympic hockey in PyeongChang in 2018, NCAA March Madness, the NBA Draft, and the Grey Cup. Throughout high school, Kate was a standout basketball player until a torn ACL forced her to switch gears and pursue a career in sports broadcasting. Kate is passionate about breaking down barriers for women. In July 2017, Kate founded and hosted the first HER MARK Summit, a gathering of speakers, athletes, and educational panels for 100 Toronto-area female high school students, which aims to empower the next generation of female leaders and enhance girls’ participation in sport.
