From idea to venture, for $5

May 15, 2014

What do dog treats, access to sports for youth, yoga and charity hockey pools have in common? These, and other venture ideas, are all part of the 2014 Venture Challenge with Royal Roads University Bachelor of Commerce students.

Launched in 2010, the Venture Challenge happens three times per year; once with on-campus students and twice with students in the blended online program. In a fun and friendly competition, teams of five undergraduate students with only $5 seed capital have five weeks to raise as much money as they can for the charity of their choice by starting and operating a small business. Since inception, the student’s work has raised more than $30,000.

“They discover for themselves what is important, challenging, fun or exciting about starting an online business,” says Prof. Geoff Archer. “Reading things in a book or hearing them from your professor only goes so far. People don’t really own knowledge until they create it themselves.”

The 2014 on-campus Venture Challenge runs until May 25.
