The Dublin Institute of Technology came away with the top prize at the 12th Royal Roads University International Undergraduate Case Competition.

Four student teams from three countries used all their applied business skills and knowledge on Saturday, April 5 to compete in the final of the 12th annual Royal Roads University International Undergraduate Case Competition. The team from the Dublin Institute of Technology came away with the top prize.

A total of 20 teams participated April 3–5 in the Learning and Innovation Centre at Royal Roads. Each team was presented with three unique business cases then given three hours to review, prepare and present recommended solutions for each. Cumulative points determined the top four finalists. The three runners-up were the University of Alberta (2nd), the University of Southern Indiana (3rd) and the University of Vermont (4th).

“Case competition is an opportunity for students to challenge themselves to apply what they are learning to real world scenarios,” said Pedro Márquez, dean of the Faculty of Management at Royal Roads. “They benefit not only in terms of exercising their problem solving, critical thinking, communication and presentation skills, but also in building strong teamwork approaches and creativity.”

Topics this year included a brewery’s corporate responsibility, expansion of a popular outdoor sporting event, issues faced by the Township of Esquimalt and economic challenges for a golf and country club. Teams present to panels of judges comprised of successful executives, business owners and managers.

“The positive reputation for the competition remains strong,” said Vivi Doersam, Manager, Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) on-campus program at Royal Roads. “Beyond the application of their learning to these cases, I think students also benefit from the networking and learning occurring between each of the teams.”

Students and staff from the BCom program at Royal Roads University organize the event annually which attracts post-secondary teams from throughout North America and other continents.
