Royal Roads to offer Doctor of Business Administration degree
A new doctoral degree at Royal Roads University will offer business professionals the opportunity to produce leading-edge research with real-world impact.
The new Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is the first of its kind in British Columbia. Launching in January 2020, the four-year blended online and on-campus program will be Royal Roads University’s second doctoral program following the establishment of the Doctor of Social Sciences degree in 2010.
“Businesses are grappling with increasingly complex challenges,” says Dr. Philip Steenkamp, Royal Roads University president. “Leaders are looking toward applied research to inform innovative business practices and strong management decisions in today’s global economy.”
Intended for professionals who aspire to be leaders in their field or sector, the DBA combines the academic research rigour of a traditional PhD with the applied focus of a professional doctorate.
“It’s designed for professionals who want to dive deep into an issue or burning business problem,” says Dr. William Holmes, dean of the Faculty of Management.
Doctor of Business Administration Program Head Dr. Hassan Wafai says the hybrid focus of the DBA offers learners a unique advantage. While traditional doctorates prepare students to work in academic environments, the DBA responds to changing Canadian labour market demands by preparing them to support industry as well.
“The DBA program will produce scholar-practitioners who will contribute to the academic community while producing actionable knowledge. That is a very powerful combination.”
