Professor pledges $50,000 toward outdoor classroom
“I love the idea of getting out of the brick and mortar and having some Socratic dialogue without the PowerPoints,” says Power. “It was an easy decision for me to give back to the institution and to the students who gave me so much.”
The Terry Power Strategic and Advanced International Studies Outdoor Classroom will be an open-concept space constructed with natural materials to accommodate up to 50 students. The design specifics and location on campus are still in the planning stages, but the outdoor classroom will be available for use by all students and faculty as well as community groups.
“I’m humbled by the opportunity to make this gift to our institution,” says Power. “It is my vision that this fundraising effort will contribute to the university and students for years to come.”
Power has taught at Royal Roads for more than 16 years, most recently in the Master of Global Management and Master of Business Administration in Executive Management programs.
President and Vice-Chancellor Allan Cahoon says Royal Roads will match Power’s pledge with an additional $50,000 toward the project.
“The outdoor classroom will encourage the unique sense of place at Royal Roads embedded in our learning and teaching model to include learning in the outdoor environment,” says Cahoon. “With a dedicated outdoor space, our students will experience a deeper connection with nature and an enriched learning experience that Royal Roads uniquely offers.”
Power recently completed a national tour with Royal Roads’ advancement, alumni relations and recruitment teams with stops in Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver and Victoria. The tour gave him the chance to meet with a large number of his former students.
“To date I think there’s more than 3,000 grad students with whom I have had the honour to share a classroom with,” says Power.
